The BBC has announced that it will demonstrate new technology to the public during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Anyone interested will be able to go and see UltraHD, 4G broadcast TV and tech that allows “white space” transmissions to deliver services in the gaps between Freeview channels.
It’s likely that most people will have heard of 4K, but most won’t have seen it. So the BBC is likely to see a lot of interest for this demonstration, as it is also using the games as a source for 4K tests. While there is no transmission of 4K for these games, anyone in Glasgow will be able to see the output on screens at the Glasgow Science Centre.
The white space trial is likely to get less attention, but has the potential to be an enormous future technology. The technology, which allows services in tiny gaps of RF spectrum could be used in the future to create a nationwide Wi-Fi network, or broadcast small amounts of data to everyone in the country. It could be a very exciting technology, and one which Google has invested in heavily in the US.
The 4G broadcast video trial is being run with EE, Huawei and Qualcomm and uses a broadcast mode already built into the 4G specification. The main benefit to this system, other other mobile streaming, is that there is no buffering. It certainly could be a boost to mobile TV in the UK, should anyone been keen for such a development.
