Final Fantasy XV review: Beautiful, yet frustrating

It is one of the most wonderfully beautiful games of 2016, with a terrific story and an impactful battle system. And it is also one of the most frustrating games of this year, teeming with mechanical flaws and pacing issues galore.  Such is the mix of traits in Final Fantasy XV. For a second straight game, Square Enix finds itself fighting to reinvent one of gaming’s most storied franchises, and in so many ways, it achieves that goal, bringing new energy and a host of new ideas to the Final Fantasy universe.  But the results are jarring, especially for franchise veterans. This is a game that’s destined to be both loved and hated, as it charts a new course for a venerable franchise. The callbacks to Final Fantasy of old – the music and the Phoenix Downs and Ifrit – are all here, but these merge with an obvious Western influence to yield a terrifically unique experience, one filled with so much variety that it’s often hard to tell a complete misstep from an attempt to simply deviate completely from gaming norm.  This is a game that feels far more like Monster Hunter than it does Final Fantasies of old….
