Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation) is about to be crowned as the world’s most advanced chipmaker, reports The Economist. The news comes at a time when rival and American chip giant Intel is going through one of the most turbulent times in its recent past. According to The Economist, TSMC will ship its new semiconductors manufactured with 7-nanometer nods as early as June 2018. Investment website Motley Fools makes a similar report, pointing to the fact that these new 7-nanometer chips will be for Apple’s next generation A12 processors. The reports further point that TSMC also plans to start production of chips with 5-nanometer technology by 2020. In recent years TSMC, which is essentially a “foundry” making chips for designers without factories, has been investing heavily into R&D to the tunes of $3 billion as 2017. In fact, TSMC invested more in research and development of node technology than both Intel and Samsung combined. Thanks to steady revenues from firms like Apple, which are unwilling to switch to firms like Samsung that are also competitors.
