Plymouth had not been immune to the retail bloodbath which has done for the likes of House of Fraser and Toys R Us – but all is not lost. The city centre may have waved goodbye to Maplin and the aforementioned Toys R Us in 2018, and it is about to loose Mothercare, Early Learning Centre, Poundworld, and, in a huge blow, House of Fraser will shut its flagship department store in early 2019. But the city centre is far from dead and though many retail chains are quaking in the face of stiff online competition, the rise of out-of-town shopping, mounting costs and taxation, and weak consumer confidence and spending, there are others that are doing a roaring trade. Here are a dozen firms that are making profits, and unlikely to be leaving Plymouth. Hotel Chocolat – up-market confectionery Hotel Chocolat has bagged double-digit sales growth as it opened new stores during a difficult time for rival retailers. The chocolate specialist’s revenue for the year ended July 1, 2018, was £116million, up 12 per cent year-on-year.
