New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe review: Mario’s back with a blast from the past

Nintendo are kicking off 2019 in fine style with New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe for the Switch. While it may be a port of a Wii U title from 2012, there’s a chance that most people haven’t played some of the Wii U’s excellent games, making this is a welcome addition to the Switch’s library. Wii U it was a welcome retro return that took our plumber protagonist back to his roots; a colourful 2D world, wacky power ups and tight level design.  While it fits the colourful stylised world of a typical modern Mario title, the graphics look a bit flat and are definitely showing their age. While they are HD, I had hoped for a little bit of an update to the lighting and shading with this being a Mario title. However it’s important to note that graphics aren’t bad and – given that any shortcomings are likely only noticeable to die hard fans and nerds like me it – don’t really detract from the experience.  You can play as one of five characters.
