Sleep loss is a common complaint in the UK, with one in three people struggling to get enough shut eye. It is well known that sleep deprivation can affect a person’s mood and impair their concentration at work. It can also put a person at risk of serious medical conditions, including heart disease and diabetes. Fortunately, simple lifestyle tweaks can help to correct the problem – studies support eating a certain fruit before bedtime. According to research conducted by the School of Nutrition and Health Sciences, Taipei Medical University, kiwis may boast sleep-inducing properties. In a four-week study, 24 adults consumed two kiwifruits one hour before going to bed each night. At the end of the study, participants fell asleep 42 per cent more quickly than when they didn’t eat anything before bedtime. Additionally, their ability to sleep through the night without waking improved by five per cent, while their total sleep time increased by 13 percent. The study researchers point out that the magic ingredient in kiwis is thought to be serotonin – a brain chemical that helps regulate the sleep/wake cycle.
