Police had to lockdown part of central London today after an Extinction Rebellion activist scaled the walls of the Palace of Westminster. It came as the eco-warrior group vowed to shut down the Tube in new demonstrations that will hit thousands of commuters on Thursday. The lone protester wore a fake gas mask and carried a STOP sign as he perched on a stone pillar, forcing police in Parliament Square to act. Expert climbers and a cherrypicker were brought in to try to get the protester down, while crowds – who were behind a 200ft cordon – chanted ‘Extinction rebellion’. The unnamed man was hauled down from the pillar, dumped in the cherrypicker and taken away by police.
