ELON Musk has plans to make his Starlink satellites “invisible to the naked eye”. This comes after the SpaceX tech recently faced criticism for disrupting the view of the night sky. SpaceX is reportedly working on a new “VisorSat” approach. This will work by using sun visors to block sunlight from the reflective antennas on the satellites. The visors should stop this light being reflected back to Earth. Current Starlink satellites in orbit don’t have these proposed sun shades and that’s why lots of people have spotted them as bright lights in the sky.According to Space News, Musk recently spoke about his plans to an astrophysics committee. He said: “Our objectives, generally, are to make the satellites invisible to the naked eye within a week, and to minimise the impact on astronomy, especially so that we do not saturate observatory detectors and inhibit discoveries.” SpaceX will be testing its new VisorSat system on its next Starlink launch. These have been occurring on a monthly basis in 2020.If it goes to plan then future Starlink satellites will have the feature. The ones currently in orbit reportedly won’t be amended as they are said to have a short lifespan of three to… Read full this story
