Nvidia is using the power of graphics processors and artificial intelligence to bring 5G connectivity to the mobile edge. At Mobile World Congress Americas in Los Angeles, California, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced that the company is partnering with Ericsson and Red Hat to help mobile network operators accelerate 5G deployment and better utilize the boost in bandwidth for applications that you’d care about, like gaming, virtual reality and augmented reality, autonomous driving, and connecting your smart home to 5G networks. The partnerships address some of the shortcomings of current mobile network architectures. For example, 4G LTE networks are configured so that they’re optimized for peak capacity with dedicated hardware to deliver voice and data access, explained Nvidia general manager of enterprise and edge computing Justin Boitana in a telephone briefing ahead of Huang’s MWC keynote. In a downtown area, this means that when users leave at night, the network … [Read more...] about Nvidia and Ericsson announce the first GPU-powered 5G mobile network
It has been nearly a decade in the making, but 5G is finally becoming a reality. Carriers started rolling out fixed 5G to select cities in 2018, and mobile 5G has already starting making appearances in cities around the U.S. this year, with much more comprehensive rollouts expected in 2020. Right now it seems like there are more questions about 5G than there are answers. Some people are wondering what 5G is, and if they’ll ever see it in their city, while others are more interested in 5G smartphones. And of course, there is the debate about which carrier will have the best 5G service. If you have questions, we’re here to help. Here’s everything you ever wanted to know about 5G. How 5G works Before we explain how 5G works, it’s probably a good idea to explain what 5G is. There are a lot of specifics, which we talk about later in this post, but here’s a quick primer. 5G is the next generation of mobile broadband that will eventually replace, or at least … [Read more...] about What is 5G? Huawei is the world’s second-largest maker of mobile phones after Samsung, but the telecom giant has never produced a TV. That appears to be about to change, if a report from Nikkei Asian Review is accurate. Citing “sources familiar with the plan,” the publication claims that Huawei is working on an 8K TV that will have a 5G mobile data connection built-in, which would make it the first TV to do so. It’s not the first time such a pairing has surfaced — Foxconn has been touting its plans to build “5G+8K” TVs in Wisconsin, since 2017 — but so far, no actual products have been confirmed. Samsung, Sony, LG, TCL, and several other manufacturers all have 8K models on sale or planned for release later this year. As odd as it might sound to build a high-speed mobile data modem into a TV, it’s one possible answer to a recurring question about 8K as a format: How do you supply the vast amounts of bandwidth that 8K content currently requires, … [Read more...] about Huawei reportedly working on a 5G-powered 8K TV: What does that mean?
