Sony PlayStation 3 (2012)
Sony has given the PlayStation 3 its second makeover since the game system first debuted in 2006. This new version is smaller than the "Slim" update from 2009 and sports an even bigger hard drive, offering 250GB and 500GB versions that put the original 20GB and 60GB PlayStation 3 systems to shame and offering a sizeable upgrade over the 160GB and 320GB versions , which are still available. At $269.99 for the 250GB model and $299.99 (list) for the 500GB model, the new PlayStation 3 systems are either identical or only slightly more expensive than the previous versions while offering nearly twice the capacity. On the downside: The new sliding-door, top-loading-disc design feels a little like a step backward designwise. If you don't mind a slight compromise in build quality in favor of storage capacity, the new PlayStation 3 is a top-shelf system that offers the same gaming, Blu-ray playback, streaming video, and entertainment features that keep it our Editors' Choice for video game … [Read more...] about Sony PlayStation 3 (2012)
The Best Products of 2011
PCMag.com gives out a lot of awards. We should, since we test a lot of products. By the end of this year, PCMag will have reviewed more than 2,000 laptops, desktops, digital cameras, HDTVs, security suites, productivity apps, cloud-based storage services, and more, including at least nine different versions of Angry Birds. Each product and service is rated according to its competition and, when warranted, given an Editors' Choice award for best-in-class excellence. In addition, products may qualify for our new Extreme Performance Award, which cites outstanding benchmark test scores. We also recognize environmentally-friendly construction or operation, with our GreenTech Approved seal. Perhaps the greatest distinction we give, however, is our Best of the Year Awards, which are presented to those products that truly dazzle us. To qualify for Best of the Year, a product must have been tested by a PCMag analyst in the mid-November 2010 to November 1, 2011 time period. PCMag's experts … [Read more...] about The Best Products of 2011
Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4)
Two years into its life cycle and the Sony PlayStation 4 has definitely reached its stride. The eighth-generation game system packs the same impressive power, excellent DualShock 4 controller, and nearly identical interface it had when the system launched, and remains a strong, compelling package. The PS4 now uses Sony's C-Chassis, a slightly different case from the launch PS4 that retains nearly identical dimensions and button/port/drive positions, but is lighter and completely matte black. It's also less expensive, retailing for $349 for the 500GB model, compared with the launch price of $399, and certain PS4 bundles include systems with 1TB hard drives for $449. The PlayStation 4 still faces off against the Microsoft Xbox One, and once again the choice between the two boils down to a matter of taste. The PS4's complete lack of backward compatibility (a lack the Xbox One initially shared but is slowly addressing) will have most gamers clinging to their old system, even if they … [Read more...] about Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4)
Sony PlayStation 4 Slim
Sony regularly updates its game systems with new, sleeker designs, and the PlayStation 4 is no exception. Besides releasing the larger, more powerful PS4 Pro last year, Sony also rolled out a smaller, thinner version of the original PS4. This PS4 Slim replaces the first PS4 as the default model, with a lower $299.99 price tag and a 1TB hard drive (though 500GB models are still available in bundles with games). Considering it's smaller, has more storage, and less expensive than the original, the PS4 Slim earns our Editors' Choice for home gaming consoles. Design The new PS4 Slim design is downright svelte compared with the original PS4 and the chunkier PS4 Pro. It's a 10.5-inch square that measures just 1.6 inches high, trimming over half an inch from each edge compared with the launch model. It shares the same parallelogram profile with angled front and back panels as the PS4 and PS4 Pro, along with a similar prominent groove running lengthwise around the front and sides of the system. … [Read more...] about Sony PlayStation 4 Slim
