The research firm pegged Apple's U.S. market share at 29 percent for the first quarter, up 7 percent from a year ago. At the same time, Samsung's share shot up by 140 percent. But at 24 percent of the U.S. market, it still trailed that of Apple last quarter. Apple's iPhone commanded the top three spots in market share among devices for the quarter, with the iPhone 4s in first place, followed by the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS. Samsung's Galaxy S II took home fourth place, with HTC's Evo 3D in fifth. Apple continued to dominate despite a decline in share from the holiday quarter, according to NPD. Apple launched its latest lawsuit against Samsung with an International Trade Commission complaint filed yesterday that seeks an injunction to prevent the Korean giant's key Android smartphones and tablets from being imported into the U.S. Bloomberg first reported the Apple ITC suit today and Florian Mueller is handicapping those patents in question. Apple has five technical patents and two design patents aimed at Samsung's Android army. In many respects, Apple's move with the ITC isn't surprising. Samsung also has an ITC lawsuit against Apple. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Apple on Friday rested its patent-infringement suit against Samsung after an expert detailed the $2.19 billion in damages the company says it's due from Samsung.Samsung will kick off its defense later Friday with Google Android executive Hiroshi Lockheimer taking the stand. The company also said it would call Dale Sohn, the former head of Samsung's US mobile business, as well as other Google Android executives such as Dianne Hackborn and Cary Clark. Attorneys for the Korean giant said the company may call 17 witnesses by the end of the day Monday, though many would be via deposition. Nevertheless, Judge Lucy Koh said the company had to narrow its list.
