People Are Saying a K-Pop Group Ripped Off

Popular Korean group Crayon Pop gets flak for its alleged costume knocks-offs. And now some are wondering if the group's newest single, "Lonely Christmas," doesn't rip off the theme song for anime Lupin III. Here is "Lonely Christmas." And here is the Lupin III theme from 1978. One Korean YouTube user even made a direct comparison of each song's intro. Maybe Crayon Pop paid to sample the theme? Maybe it doesn't sound like Lupin III? Maybe it's okay because this is just the beginning? Some people online seem to think there are similarities. On 2ch, Japan's largest forum, there are accusations of outright plagiarism. Others online called it "sampling." 韓国アイドルグループ、ルパン三世のテーマをパクるwwwwww [2ch] Photos: obscurendure To contact the author of this post, write to bashcraftATkotaku.com or … [Read more...] about People Are Saying a K-Pop Group Ripped Off

Korean Pop Bands that Cosplay Are the Best

As far as South Korean boy bands go, Super Junior is about as big as they come. And if their music wasn't enough to win you over, have you seen their cosplay? Their airport cosplay, that is. To celebrate Super Junior's 8th anniversary, the group's members decided to cosplay. Several of the members dressed up as other Korean celebs, but as tipster Sang points out, two members—Shindong and Heechul—dressed up as League of Legends characters. Shindong was Ahri, while Heechul was Lee Sin. Getting ready to leave for a concert in Mexico, the group even went to the airport in costume. And yes, that is Leon cosplay you see. The group has done this before—for the fans, really. Below, you can see them in Avengers and Dragonball cosplay from when they were arriving back in South Korea. Twitter Is Still Great at Finding Racists and Morons

Looking for idiots? Racists? What about insensitive people? Twitter is a good place to start. Last night, South Korean pop group Girls's Generation won YTMA Video of the Year for "I Got a Boy," beating the likes of Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, One Direction, and Lady Gaga. That's some stiff competition, and Girls' Generation's win is a big deal. The award was based on metrics such as views, likes, comments over the past year. Girls' Generation's winning video "I Got a Boy," and that video, which was uploaded last December, has over 74 million views, over 400,000 likes, and nearly a half a million comments. Some people on Twitter were insensitive. Others were ignorant. Tumblr site Sanctuary and music blog PopDust have been collecting some of the worst from Twitter. Here's a sample: The video's YouTube comments get pretty rough, too... Most of the above tweets seem to be made by hardcore Western pop fans who tweet pretty much exclusively about their favorite idol. In short: … [Read more...] about Twitter Is Still Great at Finding Racists and Morons

Korean Network Backtracks After Racist Blackface Ad Causes Firestorm

Yesterday, some rather off-color promotional material for a live play by the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) caught the internet’s attention. And by “off-color,” I mean “extremely racist.” As you can see, the flyers featured actors in blackface promoting a segment of the play actually called “The Blacks.” According to the promotional material, the play, written by and featuring members of the sketch comedy show Gag Concert and intended to be part of the Busan International Comedy Festival, is a modern adaptation of an older sketch comedy series called “Humor 1” or “Humor 1st Street.” Since the backlash, however, KBS has removed the blackface characters and the “Blacks” reference from their promotional material. Unfortunately, Korea has a very well-documented history of blackface. In July, a K-pop star caught flak for using blackface to portray an already pretty racist cartoon character from a kids show. … [Read more...] about Korean Network Backtracks After Racist Blackface Ad Causes Firestorm

The only TV I really love is Korean TV, and I’m not Korean

I didn't plan to be a black woman into Korean entertainment. It started about six months ago on a bleak, snowy winter day: I googled something like "What to binge watch Netflix." I ended up on a list on Refinery 29 that had both Homeland and something called Boys Over Flowers on it. Homeland seemed depressing and stressful; Boys Over Flowers was described as the Korean Gossip Girl. I chose the latter. I love teen dramas—from Buffy to Vampire Diaries to Skins and Misfits—and I'd seen a lot of the original Gossip Girl, so I figured I had nothing to lose. In fact, I gained a whole new obsession. It was the beginning of a deep dive into K-dramas—which are simply massive in Asia and gaining momentum worldwide; one series has been streamed more than 2.5 billion times— and subsequently a flirtation with K-pop, which recently culminated in attending the first-ever East Coast KCON this summer. Along the way, I've discovered that 3 … [Read more...] about The only TV I really love is Korean TV, and I’m not Korean
