A black New York City Police Department commander is receiving sharp criticism from other law enforcement officers after her police precinct’s account tweeted out the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on Friday. According to the New York Daily News, Deputy Inspector Janice Holmes, who commands the NYPD’s 100th Precinct in the city’s Queens borough, is facing backlash from fellow officers following the controversial tweet, which lauded the accomplishments of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson. “Jack Johnson became the first African-American man to hold the World Heavyweight Champion boxing title in 1908. ... #Blacklivesmatter,” the tweet read in part. It didn’t take long for officers to sound off about the BLM hashtag, the Daily News reports: “How can a precinct commander lead people when she aligns herself with a group that is known to hate law enforcement and wants police officers dead?” Daniel McCaughan wrote about Holmes, who is black. … [Read more...] about Black NYPD Commanding Officer Accused of Celebrating ‘Hate Group’ After #BlackLivesMatter Tweet

Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the third runner-up on season two of Survivor, had a particularly stupid thought Monday which she helpfully shared on national television. Elisabeth wondered why the Black Lives Matter movement hasn’t been classified as a hate group. What’s funny is that we’ve all been wondering the same thing about her. Hasselbeck pondered this question that was designed solely to further the narrative that black people deserve to be gunned down at the hands of their own government during a segment today on Fox & Friends, which attempted to make the very thin connection between the killing of a deputy in Texas by a man who happens to be black and the Black Lives Matter movement (h/t via the Wrap). Elisabeth and [insert generic white, Fox New dudebro here] were joined by their resident Uncle Tom black person, Kevin Jackson, who described the movement as “nonsense” and suggested that black people are being shot by the police at alarming rates … [Read more...] about Why Isn’t Elisabeth Hasselbeck Classified As a Hate Group?
Just like the sun, the tides and Twitter backlash, Fox News is predictable. Robert Ailes’ gang of fear-mongering madmen is doing exactly what we all figured they would do and are running all the way down the field with their grand “The Black Lives Matter Movement Is a Hate Group” narrative—which was born, bred and multiplied within the walls of their studios. Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who may or may not also be a hate group, pondered out loud on live television why Black Lives Matter hasn’t yet been classified as a hate group. To be clear, nobody was saying or wondering this before she opened her mouth on Monday. And now, in true Fox News form, this non-story has spread like wildfire. Again, no one was or is asking this question but Fox News—just like no one was particularly concerned with Santa Clause’s race or what items people who use food stamps choose for themselves. But here we are. A Media Matters email helpfully rounded up the spread of … [Read more...] about Fox News Continues to Try to Make ‘Black Lives Matter Is a Hate Group’ Happen
If you’re a white person who resents the work of Black Lives Matter activists, you might first vomit-type, “AllLives Matter!!!1!” somewhere on your Facebook timeline. You might find this doesn’t express your indignation to the degree you want it to, despite some satisfyingly angry rebuttals from your nieces and nephews. That’s when you escalate to “WHITE LIVES MATTER” and before you know it, you’re sharing hyper-racist memes littered with spelling errors, meeting like-minded individuals who also think “blue” is a race, and forming a club that has been officially designated a hate group. That seems to be the story of White Lives Matter, who are finally getting the recognition they crave. The New York Times reports that the Southern Law Poverty Center, which tracks hate groups in the U.S., has clarified that this white supremacist club is definitely a hate group, if you weren’t sure: “The White Lives Matter website … [Read more...] about White Lives Matter Has Been Declared a Hate Group
Valve is notorious for a lot of things, but beyond not releasing Half-Life 3, one thing stands out: its hands-off, often silent approach to running the world’s biggest PC gaming platform, Steam. This has landed the company in hot water in the past, but in the face of calls to crack down on user groups that glorify things like Nazism, white supremacy, and school shooters, Valve has yet to speak up. Over the past couple weeks, sites like Motherboard, The Center For Investigative Reporting, and Huffington Post have dropped damning reports about the state of Steam groups and curators, with the author of the HuffPo report saying that he’d uncovered “thousands” of groups and accounts that claimed to “be Nazis, defend school shooters, and spout racist and violent bile” while The Center For Investigative Reporting said it had uncovered 173 groups that specifically glorified school shooting. All three sites posted screenshots of numerous groups and curators … [Read more...] about Valve Is Quietly Deleting Hate Groups, But It Isn’t Solving Steam’s Big Problem
