With its 11th mobile operating system, Apple continues to add desktop functionality to the tablet version of iOS. But instead of actually merging it with macOS, iOS 11 (now at version 11.3) builds on an already-mature foundation, with an emphasis on adding new ways to get work done on a tablet. The phone version doesn't get quite as many new, shiny features a previous major updates, but it does get new augmented reality capabilities, a redesigned Control Center, Camera and Photos app improvements, a revamped App Store, Apple Pay in Messenger, an enhanced Siri, and the new Files app, to name a few. iOS 11 has been honed to a fine edge, and it's never been sharper for the iPhone. On the iPad, it feels almost experimental in the best way, with intriguing possibilities for the future. The Seeds of Apple Apple has been using the phrase "it just works" since the days of Steve Jobs, and that's a generally accurate description of the company's sleekly designed products. The phrase "this is how … [Read more...] about Apple iOS 11
It's a record year for PCMag.com—we've tested and rated more than 2,500 products in the last 12 months. Sure, there were some real clunkers in there, but a lot of those products are excellent specimens of technology. Now comes the hard part. We had to narrow down the top performers to a list of categories, and then within that category, pick the best product. It's a lot more difficult than it seems. Even our own Editors' Choice award can't be the final arbiter, because, sometimes, multiple products can lead a category. But as in years previous, we repeated the mantra, "There can only be one!" Friendly debates threatened to degenerate to fisticuffs in PC Labs as the merits of various contenders were hashed out, all in the service of narrowing the choice to the ultimate pick in a given category. Finally, bloodied but unbroken, our analysts and editors emerged from the room in which they'd been locked with a list. And that's what we present to you today: the very best products we … [Read more...] about The Best Products of 2015
When you test as many products as the PCMag analysts do, it's not surprising that they all start to look alike. Every box seems to have the same features, every game the same mechanics, every technology is simply keeping up with the digital Joneses. Then, once in a while, something truly amazing stands out. Those are the products we've gathered here, the top 100 of close to 2,500 tested by our staff in 2017. That's only 4 percent of the reviews published at PCMag.com this year. The trends are obvious. Desktop PCs, once the lifeblood of our coverage, aren't as plentiful nor, to be honest, as interesting as they used to be. Laptops are the top PCs, ubiquitous mobile devices keep us connected everywhere (whether we like it or not), and the real trend is in audio. Not just that speakers are more versatile and sound better than ever—they're smarter too, with voice control at the forefront of our future digital world. This goes hand-in-hand with the explosive growth of the connected … [Read more...] about The Best Products of 2017
