In July 2016, Playboy model Dani Mathers—crowned Playmate of the Year in 2015—committed a grotesque violation of privacy by secretly photographing a naked, 70-year-old woman at the gym and posting it to Snapchat. The photograph includes a blithely cruel caption, “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either” and, for good measure, features Mathers herself, feigning horror. At the end of May 2017 she will be tried in court for this offense. Good. According to the New York Daily News, Mathers argued that the Peeping Tom law in question is unconstitutional due to its ambiguity. The model hoped this strategy would prevent her case from going to court, but alas—no luck. Los Angeles judge Gustavo Sztraicher ruled, “The court finds the statute is constitutional and not void for vagueness.” Under California law, it is illegal to secretly photograph or record an “identifiable person” in a residence, changing room, or tanning … [Read more...] about After Body-Shaming a Fellow Gym Patron, Dani Mathers Will Be Tried in Court
Playboy’s 2015 Playmate of the Year Dani Mathers, who secretly photographed a 70-year-old woman at her gym and posted it publicly to Snapchat with the caption “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either” last July, pleaded no contest to misdemeanor invasion-of-privacy charges in May. In a new interview with Good Morning America, Mathers admits that the experience taught her a lot about privacy, specifically regarding her own privacy it seems. “I’ve lost a lot of that myself as well. We’ve had a lot of paparazzi involved in my family life,” she said. “I had my privacy taken away after I took someone else’s.” Mathers said she meant to send the photo to a friend and had no intentions of “breaking the law” by posting it publicly. “I know the difference between right and wrong and I chose wrong,” she said. Instead of 45 days in jail, Mathers was sentenced to only 30 days of community service, … [Read more...] about Dani Mathers, Playboy Model Who Body-Shamed Gym Patron: ‘I Chose Wrong’
Dani Mathers, the model who shared a photo of a gym goer naked in a locker room on her Snapchat story with the caption “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either,” was offered the chance to give her side of the story in Us Weekly this week. Why she was given such a sympathetic ear at all escapes me, but—whoops!—she squandered the opportunity! So I guess I can’t be too annoyed. Though she begins on the right note (aka a regretful and apologetic one), Mathers throws a wrench into the whole thing by shifting the interview into an attempt to paint herself as the real victim. The extent of her tone-deafness here is truly unbelievable and make for an almost fascinating read. When asked what she would say to the woman she photographed last July (who says Mathers has not reached out to her) if given the chance, Mathers said: A million things have run through my mind. But bottom line is: “I’m so sorry.” I never intended to hurt … [Read more...] about Dani Mathers Is ‘Sorry’ But She’s Also ‘Not Sorry’
For some inexplicable reason, Jon Snow and Danerys Targareyn have more chemistry in this Instagram photo from a Rolling Stone photo shoot that took place five years ago than they do acting on the show about dragons and politics, and I would LOVE to know why! Before the theories, here are some facts. This photo, via Refinery29, is from a Rolling Stone photoshoot with the Game of Thrones friends out of their Westerosi drag and in regular-ass clothes, looking like normal people sans elaborate wigs and furs and chain mail. Peggy Sirota, the photographer for the shoot, threw this casual outtake on Instagram last year. In an interview with the Daily Beast, director Alan Taylor basically confirmed that yes, Jon and Dany are about to get it the fuck on, answering the prayers and insistent please of the thirstiest aunties of Westeros and ideally satisfying a small but vocal nation of horned-up GoT fans desperate to see Kit Harington’s fine ass bone down. Great news, all around. But why … [Read more...] about Jon and Dany Have More Chemistry in This Photo Than In All of
What’s in Your Bag? is a recurring feature where we ask people to tell us a bit more about their everyday gadgets by opening their bags and hearts to us. This week, we’re featuring Verge tech reporter Dani Deahl. I didn’t realize how much stuff I carry with me until I had to unpack my bag for this piece. I’ve been a traveling DJ for over a decade and so I’ve learned, over time, the varying bits and pieces I need to account for the “what ifs” that can happen while at gigs, nightclubs, or festivals. DJ rule number one — always carry a USB drive, even if you’re not planning to DJ! Aside from that, my setup is both functional and sentimental. Looking at everything, I think the way I curate my objects is so they serve a purpose, but also remind me of a memory. Tiny breadcrumbs of my travels and my life can be found throughout. Why have a regular-ass pen when I can have a pen I won with my husband in a Hong Kong arcade? I don’t get … [Read more...] about What’s in your bag, Dani Deahl?
