John Carmack Proposes a Way to Fight GPU & Console Shortages

John Carmack, a legendary game developer, has proposed a way to fight shortages of graphics cards and game consoles that are to some degree caused by miners and scalpers. The founder of id Software believes that manufacturer-led auctions could help gamers to get their hands on their desired hardware, but at a price. "Given shortages and speculators on things like [the GeForce RTX] 3090 GPUs and new consoles, it seems like we really would be better off with a transparent auction system directly from the manufacturers and a more efficient market," Carmack wrote in a Twitter post. "The world of sales channels prevented that in the past, but we may be moving past that for a lot of products. There would be much indignation at reported prices out of the gate, but removing intermediaries should net out better for consumers in the end." Scalping and Mining: The Gamer's Main Enemies? High PC demand because of remote working and education have recently caused massive shortages across … [Read more...] about John Carmack Proposes a Way to Fight GPU & Console Shortages

Intel to Make Custom x86 CPUs as Part of Ambitious Expansion Plan

Intel on Tuesday revealed its vision for the future called IDM 2.0, which is an evolution of the company's integrated device manufacturing (IDM) model mixed with two contrasting ingredients: outsourcing and foundry services. Intel will not give up its own manufacturing and will do everything it needs to recapture process technology leadership. Furthermore, Intel will build additional production capacities in the U.S. and Europe and will start offering foundry services to third parties. The company will spend $20 billion to expand its capacities in Arizona. To gain customers, Intel Foundry Services will offer clients Intel's IP, including customizable CPU cores, and will embrace industry-standard IP and flows, making it relatively easy to switch from other makers to Intel. Imagine an Amazon, Microsoft or Google-designed x86 chip! Meanwhile, to offer its customers absolutely the best products, Intel will outsource some of its devices to third parties that happen to have something … [Read more...] about Intel to Make Custom x86 CPUs as Part of Ambitious Expansion Plan

Unizyx CEO Reportedly Says Networking Chip Supply Is at a 30-Year Low

It might be time to add another supply issue to the list. Unizyx CEO Gordon Yang said the company is suffering the worst networking chip shortage in 30 years, DigiTimes today reported, and that it will likely have to raise its prices as a result. Unizyx offers a wide array of networking products via its Zyxel and MitraStar DMS brands. Right now it's seeing increased demand because several next-generation technologies—5G networks, Wi-Fi 6 , and Wi-Fi 6E —are all becoming more popular. Yang told DigiTimes that Unizyx can't source enough networking chips to meet that demand. Even if it could, rising component and transportation costs would likely result in higher prices for Unizyx products anyway, according to the report. That ought to sound familiar by now. Not just the networking chip shortage, although the global chip shortage is front-of-mind for many companies, but also the fact that transportation costs have risen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The … [Read more...] about Unizyx CEO Reportedly Says Networking Chip Supply Is at a 30-Year Low

Intel Xe DG2 gaming GPU leak reveals serious Nvidia RTX 3080 competitor

More details are emerging through leaks about Intel’s premium Xe gaming graphics , and it looks like Nvidia’s GeForce and AMD’s Radeon are about to get some serious competition. In a detailed leak from YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, we now have images of the GPU’s engineering board, as well as some specifications behind Intel’s heavyweight gaming GPU. High-end gamers will be pleased to know that if Moore’s Law is Dead’s information pans out, Intel’s Gen 12-based Xe HPG DG2 discrete graphics card will support ray-tracing, making it competitive against Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 2000 and 3000 series as well as AMD’s current Radeon RX 6000 series graphics . The card is also expected to support Intel’s take on DLSS — something that AMD did not provide with the launch of Radeon RX 6000 — so you should get some pretty great performance with graphics upscaling. Nvidia calls its technique Dynamic Learning Super Sampling, and Intel’s version could be called XeSS, or Xe Super … [Read more...] about Intel Xe DG2 gaming GPU leak reveals serious Nvidia RTX 3080 competitor
