I wonder what it's like to be excited for the next season of Game of Thrones. The eighth and final season of HBO's swords/butts/dragons trifecta is premiering on April 14 and the world is collectively losing its mind in anticipation. Like a kid in a hot pie shop, fans are salivating at the thought of new twists, big battles and more fur capes than a middle-aged dude at a Renaissance Fair. But I'm not a wide-eyed kid, excited to wake up on Game of Thronesmas and see what George R. R. Santa has left in my stocking. I'm the dead-eyed parent of that kid, standing in line at Target on Christmas Eve while other people's children scream at my feet. Staring down the barrel of another season of "event television" and knowing that if I just grit my teeth and close my eyes, it will be over. Night will come soon and I'll be able to sit alone in the kitchen with a glass of box wine, massaging my temples before the next fresh hell emerges. Because it turns out, life in the 21st-century pop culture … [Read more...] about Game of Thrones Season 8 has me begging for the sweet release of death
Hells kitchen season 8
Hell yeah, hockey is back! After suffering through three months of sports that do not involve ice, and night after night of 90-degree temperatures with no A/C (though that one might just be me), the most beautiful and fun game in the world has returned to save you from five-hour ALDS games and lopsided Alabama football wins, and also heatstroke. This is going to be an extremely fun season, and I’m not just bullshitting you to try and get you to scroll through a stupidly long blog about a relatively unpopular sport. By my count, there are as many as 22 NHL teams worth caring about—or at least watching on League Pass a few times—as we head into 2018–19. I’m excited to see all of them except for the vile and villainous Boston Bruins, so read this thing and get excited too. Teams are listed in some vague semblance of best to worst: Teams You Might Be Watching Until June: Tampa Bay Lightning Why are they good? Holy shit, there are so many reasons. Now-former … [Read more...] about A 2018–19 NHL Season Preview Of Every Team, From Best To Islanders

Welcome back to Behind Closed Ovens, where we take a look at the best and strangest stories from inside the food industry. Today, as promised, we have part two in our series recounting tales of truly horrible restaurant customers. As always, these are real e-mails from real readers. Mary Malloy: It was a slow Tuesday night shift. Nothing too exciting was happening. Overall it was a pretty smooth shift. Until this party of 8 walks in. (4 adults, 4 kids). Now my restaurant doesn't do automatic gratuity anymore, unfortunately. When a party comes in, us servers usually grit our teeth, pray to the Gods that they leave at least 12%. Sad, right? Because it was a slow night, a party like this was going to be the bulk of my tips for the evening. I walk over to the table, as perky and as entertaining as possible. "Hey guys! My name is Mary. Welcome to…" "Listen we don't have time for that. Could you just bring us waters, no ice. "Sure. No problem." I'm not taken back by this rudeness. … [Read more...] about Restaurant Customers From Hell, Part Two
A week ago, Fox began to delay posting its shows online for eight days after they aired on television. Effective Aug. 15, unless users have a subscription to Hulu Plus or DISH Network, they’ve got to wait more than a week to watch shows like Glee or The Simpsons. According to TorrentFreak, this delay has caused a spike in piracy of Fox programs. TorrentFreak said it tracked two Fox shows on BitTorrent for the first week the delay has been in effect. In the first five days, downloads for the latest episode of Hell’s Kitchen increased by 114 percent compared to the first three episodes of the season and downloads for MasterChef increased by 189 percent. In the past, Fox shows were generally posted online 24 hours after they were broadcast on TV. TorrentFreak cites lack of availability as a reason viewers turn to alternative sources. That Fox has stopped making its shows available online in just a day doesn’t mean people will stop watching these shows, but that … [Read more...] about Has Fox’s 8-Day Hulu Delay Caused a Spike in Piracy?
