If You Think Urban Meyer’s Career Is Over, You Underestimate The Power Of Winning

August 2, 2018 by deadspin Leave a Comment

Would it be too much to say that winning feels like great sex? The rush of adrenaline, the euphoria, the permission to scream and yell and do whatever you want in the dark of night. The sense that you are invincible and, better yet, unique and special. The scientific term for feeling as if your team’s win is your own is basking in reflected glory. But that doesn’t quite do justice to how powerful it is. It’s the feeling that transforms stupid but rich owners into community leaders and idiot columnists into cultural touchstones And it turns men like Urban Meyer into something akin to gods, if god wore khakis and sported a Midwestern affect. This probably sounds ridiculous, unless you’ve ever been a winner. The Florida Gators were what I’d call minor winners when I was in college. I applied to Florida because it was the best school in my state for my major, I couldn’t afford anywhere else, and it had a football team. I couldn’t picture myself … [Read more...] about If You Think Urban Meyer’s Career Is Over, You Underestimate The Power Of Winning

Look! Fusion writers and editors annotated the debate

October 28, 2015 by splinternews Leave a Comment

Fusion is watching theGOP CNBC debate live, and transcribing it as quickly and accurately as humanly possible. Join us and follow along as we chronicle the conversation and annotate it using Genius. CARL QUINTANILLA: This first is an open question. This series of debates is essentially a job interview with the American people and then any job interview you know this you get asked what's your biggest weakness. So in 30 seconds, without telling us that you try too hard or that you're a perfectionist, what is your biggest weakness and what are you doing to address it? Will go left to right governor Kasich 30 seconds case it: GOV. JOHN KASICH: Good question, but I want to tell you my great concern is that we are on the verge, perhaps, of picking someone who cannot do this job. I've watched to see people say that we should dismantle Medicare and Medicaid and leave our senior citizens out in the cold. I've heard them talk about deporting 10 or 11 [million] people here from this country out … [Read more...] about Look! Fusion writers and editors annotated the debate

Bernie Sanders had a point about those ‘fancy dormitories’ and ‘giant football stadiums’

December 20, 2015 by splinternews Leave a Comment

One of the reasons college is so prohibitively expensive is that "some colleges and universities that are spending a huge amount of money on fancy dormitories and on giant football stadiums," Senator Bernie Sanders said during Saturday night's Democratic debate in Manchester, N.H. "Maybe we should focus on quality education with well-paid faculty members. And I understand in many universities a heck of a lot of vice presidents earn a big salary," he said. Officials at public schools do tend to be better compensated than professors. Football and basketball coaches at large state colleges are often the highest-paid public employees in many states, as Deadspin reported in 2013. The increases in pay for public university presidents and coaches has far outstripped increases for professors, according to an annual study from the American Association of University Professors. The study found that public university presidents at doctoral colleges saw an 11.3% median pay rise between … [Read more...] about Bernie Sanders had a point about those ‘fancy dormitories’ and ‘giant football stadiums’

When will the women of professional softball get the attention they deserve?

September 5, 2016 by splinternews Leave a Comment

TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA — Kelly Kretschman didn’t cry. Her eyes looked watery, but maybe that was just a reflection off the white war paint smeared on her cheekbones. She took a seat at the long table next to her teammates for a press conference after a devastating loss in the National Pro Fastpitch championship series. When her coach suggested that the veteran softball player should be proud of her team, of her effort, Kretschman nodded, but her eyes stayed focused on her lap. She certainly should be proud of her season with the USSSA Pride—of her entire career. At 36 years old, she’s a four-time All-American and a two-time Olympic medalist in right field. Just a few days before this championship series began, Kretschman became the first player in history to win the triple crown for the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) league—meaning she led the league in batting average (.466), home runs (13), and runs batted in (45). She’s a dominant force … [Read more...] about When will the women of professional softball get the attention they deserve?

Korea’s million dollar private teachers

August 4, 2013 by zdnet Leave a Comment

You may think that a teacher could only achieve rock star status and be paid millions in some alternate universe. However, it's really happening in South Korea - in the private sector. The Wall Street Journal ran a guest article by Amanda Ripley, an Emerson Fellow at the New America Foundation, who wrote about Korean teacher Kim Ki-hoon in an education feature over the weekend. Mr. Kim is part of a shadow system that employees more teachers than Korea's more mainstream schools. Korea is a world leader in education, so Ripley sought to learn what is working so well there. The New America Foundation is a Washington think tank that is chaired by Google CEO Eric Schmidt. Its current CEO is famed The New Yorker journalist Steve Coll. Many of Kim's students are the children of the elite who can afford a private tutor and classes are given entirely online. Korea has developed a "free market for teaching" due to demand for quality instruction at after hours schools called hagwons, Ripley … [Read more...] about Korea’s million dollar private teachers
