AMD’s upcoming RX 6700 XT is positioned to take on Nvidia’s RTX 3070 as the 1440p performance king. For around $500, AMD is promising all the bells and whistles of its more expensive RX 6800 and 6900 , including ray tracing, variable-rate shading, and Radeon Boost. But can the RX 6700 XT actually compete with the RTX 3070? The 6700 XT hasn’t launched yet, so it’s important to wait for third-party benchmarks. Still, we rounded up AMD’s internal numbers and compared them with the performance of an RTX 3070 to get an idea of how well the card should perform in the real world. Pricing and availability The RX 6700 XT was announced during AMD’s Where Gaming Begins event on March 3 with a launch date of March 18. The card is launching with a $479 MSRP, and AMD will launch its first-party and board partner cards on the same day. The RTX 3070 released on October 28, 2020, for $499. Board partner cards launched simultaneously, priced $50 to $100 more than Nvidia’s model. You can … [Read more...] about RX 6700 XT vs. RTX 3070

HP Spectre x360 14 vs. Dell XPS 13: Two amazing laptops, compared
Spectre and XPS have been the most premium laptop brands for years now, and the most recent entries in those lines have taken things to another level. The HP Spectre x360 14 and the Dell XPS 13 are undoubtedly two of the best laptops you can buy . Don’t let HP’s name fool you: The HP Spectre x360 14 uses a 13.5-inch 3:2 display and is officially in the same class as the Dell XPS 13 . They also both now use a 16:10 aspect ratio, making for a similarly shaped design. Comparing them makes sense beyond just their displays, though — if you’re looking for a 13-inch laptop, then these two machines should be at the top of your list. Design The convertible 2-in-1 Spectre x360 14 and clamshell XPS 13 couldn’t be more different in their aesthetic approaches. The Spectre wants to not only stand out in a crowd, but it also wants to be the center of attention with its gem-cut design and brightly colored accents (the color depends on the model). The XPS 13, on the other hand, wants to … [Read more...] about HP Spectre x360 14 vs. Dell XPS 13: Two amazing laptops, compared
Chess. Jeopardy. Go. Why do we use games as a benchmark for A.I.?
Growing up, many of us were told that playing computer or video games was a waste of time. However, when it comes to training artificial intelligence, not only is it not a waste of time, but it could be key to developing the intelligent agents of tomorrow. Several years ago, researchers from Google DeepMind impressively demonstrated that cutting-edge A.I. could be used to master several classic Atari games, without being explicitly taught how to play them. Since then, multiple researchers have tried their hand at reinforcement learning systems that use trial and error to learn how to master games. Now, researchers from Uber AI Labs and OpenAI have come up with a way to refine these tools even further that enables them to exhibit a high level of performance at more complex games that gameplaying A.I. agents have previously struggled with. “The new algorithm that we developed, Go-Explore, outperforms previous machine learning algorithms on many Atari games, including the … [Read more...] about Chess. Raya and the Last Dragon review: Martial arts and fantasy merged beautifully
Walt Disney Animation Studios has never shied away from putting its own spin on popular genres, whether it’s the superhero-inspired Big Hero 6 or the gaming fantasy of Wreck-It Ralph . And, by and large, those forays have all managed to cast the Disney magic that makes them critical and commercial hits. With Raya and the Last Dragon , Disney tries its luck with a new genre: The martial arts hero’s journey. And much like the aforementioned films, Raya finds inspiration in all the right places, and imbues it with the sort of emotional weight and bright, fantastic aesthetic we’ve come to expect with Disney’s big-screen adventures. In a world … Directed by Don Hall ( Big Hero 6 ) and Carlos López Estrada ( Blindspotting ), Raya and the Last Dragon follows a young warrior, Raya (voiced by Star Wars actress Kelly Marie Tran), as she sets out to reverse the damage done to the fractured world of Kumandra by the sinister creatures known as Druun. Along the way, she … [Read more...] about Raya and the Last Dragon review: Martial arts and fantasy merged beautifully
A Paint-like app does exist on your Mac. Here’s how to find it
Since 1985, Windows has always shipped with a basic image-editing program: Paint. For MacOS, there’s no native equivalent, whether you’re running the latest version or an older one. Apple removed MacPaint long ago. However, Apple’s default app for opening images, PDFs, and other files — called Preview — comes close. It doesn’t mirror Microsoft Paint, but it has a few editing tools, like drawing, adding text, and inserting shapes. Most people don’t know these features exist because they’re hidden behind a button they never think to click. Keep in mind that Preview doesn’t allow you to create new artwork from scratch like Microsoft’s Paint — there’s no blank canvas. These tools are more for annotating and highlighting photos and other files rather than creating new pieces of artwork. Read on to find out how to enable the paint features hidden on your Mac. We’ll also go over how to use the built-in tools, and if you’re looking for something simpler, we’ll go over one-for-one … [Read more...] about A Paint-like app does exist on your Mac.
