It's easy to believe that there's gender equality in the music business, since ladies like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift dominate the cultural conversation, making hit after hit. But a look at the data reveals that overwhelmingly, those who are writing, creating, and performing American pop music are men. This week's Billboard Top 40 chart is no exception: only 22.5% of songs were performed by women. Women make up half of the American population, but represent less than a quarter of the pop charts. It's staggering. But looking at the statistics of female performers in 2015, it's exactly what we should expect. In 2015, there hasn't been a single week that female performers have made up more than 35% of the Top 40 songs. Every single week, women are underrepresented in the Top 40 as performers. Here's what the data looks like, starting in May: Five months into this analysis, it's clear that women make up somewhere between 20% and … [Read more...] about Meghan Trainor’s exclusive spot in this week’s Top 40 is very upsetting

On its surface, when news hit of Beyoncé leading the 2017 Grammy Awards with nine nominations, it read as nothing short of a win for the behemoth pop star. The Houston native has scored nods in the three big categories: Album of the Year, for her sixth studio offering, Lemonade; and Song of the Year and Record of the Year for its lead single, “Formation.” Beyoncé will compete in other categories, such as Best Rock Performance (“Don’t Hurt Yourself,” with Jack White), Best Pop Solo Performance (“Hold Up”) and Best Rap/Sung Performance (“Freedom,” with Kendrick Lamar). The end result is that Beyoncé has become the first artist ever to earn nominations in such an array of categories in a single year. On that feat, Neil Portnow, CEO and president of the Recording Academy, told the Associated Press in an interview: “Artists are feeling emboldened and courageous and just wanting to step out of the predictable … [Read more...] about Beyoncé Should Win All the Grammys This Weekend, but It Won’t Make Up for How This Show Treats Black Women and Black Art
This year’s Grammy nominees are out, and for the most part, it’s business as usual: a bunch of people who topped sales charts, a couple of wild cards and seemingly random choices (Meghan Trainor, Best New Artist?) and Taylor Swift. Kendrick Lamar led with eleven nominations and Swifties will be glad to know she got seven, but the unexpected hits are the most interesting. Courtney Barnett was a surprise in Best New Artist; The Internet and Kehlani were both nominated for “Best Urban Contemporary Album” (and yet again we are forced to ask, what the fuck does “urban contemporary” mean). Amy Poehler and Lisa Lampanelli both got nods for spoken word and comedy albums, respectively; Diplo was nominated for Producer of the Year; and if Hamilton doesn’t win for Best Musical Theater album, there is no god or America. Most of the main categories (and many of the confounding ones) are below; for the full list, for instance if you are dying to know which … [Read more...] about Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd & (Shocker) Taylor Swift: Here Are Your 2016 Grammy Nominees
Compelling social observation suggests that Taylor Swift didn’t throw her famous Independence Day party seeing as her bestie, Karlie Kloss, was hanging out with Kendall Jenner over the holiday. Some, like Buzzfeed, have interpreted this renewed alliance as shade. Why? Well, you may recall (or mercifully not) that before Swift took a break from public life following her embarrassing beef with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, she was the leader of a very visible, some would say the ultimate, “squad”: a group of young women she took glamorous selfies with and were (are?) presumably her friends. Kloss is supposed to be Swift’s best friend. Jenner—who presumably runs in the same circles as Kloss being that she is also a famous model—was rumored to be part of the squad, but she is also a member of the Kardashian clan, so her allegiance to Swift has been called into question. Kloss and Jenner haven’t been photographed together since the drama with … [Read more...] about Did Karlie Kloss Diss Taylor Swift by Hanging Out With Kendall Jenner?
If I’m interpreting a [fairly obvious] item from Blind Gossip correctly, a battle between sworn nemeses Katy Perry and Taylor Swift may have been quietly raging in board rooms and conference calls inside 30 Rockefeller Center as the current one involving Kimye took over the headlines. Because Perry and Swift will likely release new albums this year, both were potentially in the running for supplying NBC with their official Olympics anthem. Perry’s generic but effective “Rise” was the champ, and that could have been because Swift’s offering wasn’t up to snuff. Writes Blind Gossip: We’ve told you before that in order to score a big public gig like the Super Bowl, this singer really needs an anthem. We’re talking about a big song that stirs the emotions and invokes concepts like winning or victory or overcoming adversity. Well, she blew it again! She was one of several singers in competition for a song for a major sporting event, but she … [Read more...] about Was Taylor Swift’s Olympics Theme Rejected In Favor of Katy Perry’s ‘Rise’?
