Two NASA astronauts are spacewalking outside the ISS right now
NASA astronauts Kate Rubins and Victor Glover are currently performing a spacewalk outside of the International Space Station, working to upgrade the station’s solar arrays. The two astronauts began their spacewalk at 6:12 a.m. ET (3:12 a.m. PT) on Sunday, February 28, and they are expected to spend the rest of the morning carrying out upgrade work. The station will soon have new solar arrays installed — the four large pairs of solar panels which collect energy from the sun to power the station’s needs. The current solar arrays have been in constant use since the first pair were deployed in December 2000. Though the arrays are still functioning, they were only designed for a 15-year life originally, so their performance has degraded over time and it’s time they got replaced. The new arrays will be more efficient and should give a 20% to 30% boost to the station’s power, even though they are smaller than the current arrays. Before the new arrays can be installed, however, the ISS … [Read more...] about Two NASA astronauts are spacewalking outside the ISS right now
Could supermassive black holes be formed from dark matter?
At the heart of almost every galaxy lurks a monster — a supermassive black hole millions or even billions of times the mass of the sun. Astronomers are still trying to figure out how these enormous beasts form, and whether they are formed before or after the galaxies which surround them. Now, new research suggests that their formation could be related to another of astronomy’s great mysteries: Dark matter . Most black holes form when large stars collapse to a point at which they have a very large amount of mass in a small volume. But using modeling, a team has investigated what would happen in a stable galactic core made of dark matter, surrounded by a dark matter halo. They found that the center of the dark matter region could become so dense that it would collapse into a supermassive black hole. Dark matter halos are inferred to exist around galaxies, and even though they are invisible to us they seem to contain more mass than the regular matter of a typical galaxy. But to … [Read more...] about Could supermassive black holes be formed from dark matter?
Wearables don’t work the same on dark skin. It’s time to change that
Ever since wearables equipped with heart rate tech began entering the mainstream, there have been questions about the accuracy of optical heart rate sensors when taking readings on different skin tones. From Apple’s infamous so-called “tattoogate” shining a green LED light on the problem in 2015 to various academic studies during the years that followed, there has been a lot of discussion, but not a lot of conclusions. Trending in Mobile: What is 5G? 5G Network Coverage Map What happened? Have sensors changed to cope with different skin tones, or has the industry failed to change? It turns out the early research has prompted change, and may also inspire new standards for wearable heart rate sensors. The heart rate sensor on your wrist The optical heart rate sensor on the back of your smartwatch or fitness tracker works using an established technology called photoplethysmography (PPG), where a very bright light shines through your skin and tissue to measure blood … [Read more...] about Wearables don’t work the same on dark skin.
