Outriders feels like a game design period piece for the Xbox 360 generation

Outriders was supposed to be the first big, third-party video game of this new console generation. It was revealed back before players had a hint of what the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X would even look like, making it seem like a day-one launch was imminent. A few delays later and the sci-fi game was pushed out of 2020 entirely and into a new April 1 release date . With the release date finally looming, Square Enix dropped a demo for the third-person shooter, which gives players a taste of what’s to come. The three-hour gameplay snippet features a handful of missions, a brief introduction to the game’s war-torn world, and a whole lot of shooting. While Outriders offers up intrigue with its ability-based class system, playing it feels like entering a time machine. It’s a game design period piece that harkens back to the heyday of Xbox 360 shooters, for better or worse. Take cover It’s not hard to describe Outriders ; it’s a sci-fi third-person shooter with … [Read more...] about Outriders feels like a game design period piece for the Xbox 360 generation

Report: China’s Buying Used Chip-Making Equipment to Skirt US Restrictions

Tensions between the U.S. and China have proved lucrative for some Japanese companies. Nikkei Asia today reported that prices for used chip-making equipment, which aren’t subject to U.S. restrictions imposed in 2020, have risen 20% on average as a result of increased demand from Chinese semiconductor manufacturers. The U.S. imposed new sanctions on SMIC, the largest semiconductor manufacturer in China, in September 2020 to prevent it from purchasing new chip-making equipment. It also added the company to the Entity List in December 2020 to make it even harder for other businesses to supply it with American-developed technology. Used chip-making equipment sellers in Japan aren’t subject to those same restrictions. Nikkei Asia said those sellers have struggled to keep their products in stock, which has led to significant price increases over the last year. The value of critical equipment such as lithography systems reportedly tripled in that timeframe. Nikkei Asia said … [Read more...] about Report: China’s Buying Used Chip-Making Equipment to Skirt US Restrictions

US Moves to Cut Off Chinese Chipmaker SMIC With New Sanctions

The US governments' attempts to cripple Huawei's business have wreaked havoc on the company, but those efforts are part of a broader, concerted and long-standing strategy to deny China access to critical chipmaking technology . That strategy entered a new stage today as, according to Reuters and the Financial Times , the US slapped SMIC, China's largest chipmaker, with sanctions that will prevent it from attaining critically-needed equipment and design tools. The US government cites the potential use of the chipmaker's products in military applications as the rationale behind the decision. The new export controls bar software and equipment providers, like Lam Research, KLA Corp, and Applied Materials, from doing business with the company. The new sanctions intensify the already-existing sanctions against SMIC, which previously only affected end products. The export sanctions now target materials used to make chips, too. However, the US government did stop short of … [Read more...] about US Moves to Cut Off Chinese Chipmaker SMIC With New Sanctions

Wearables don’t work the same on dark skin. It’s time to change that

Ever since wearables equipped with heart rate tech began entering the mainstream, there have been questions about the accuracy of optical heart rate sensors when taking readings on different skin tones. From Apple’s infamous so-called “tattoogate” shining a green LED light on the problem in 2015 to various academic studies during the years that followed, there has been a lot of discussion, but not a lot of conclusions. Trending in Mobile: What is 5G? 5G Network Coverage Map What happened? Have sensors changed to cope with different skin tones, or has the industry failed to change? It turns out the early research has prompted change, and may also inspire new standards for wearable heart rate sensors. The heart rate sensor on your wrist The optical heart rate sensor on the back of your smartwatch or fitness tracker works using an established technology called photoplethysmography (PPG), where a very bright light shines through your skin and tissue to measure blood … [Read more...] about Wearables don’t work the same on dark skin.
