The best hybrid cars for 2021

Hybrid technology is almost as old as the car itself. Porsche — the man, not the company — fine-tuned a gasoline-electric drivetrain shortly after the turn of the 20th century, but the technology didn’t merge into the mainstream until Toyota released the first-generation Prius in 1997. Nearly a quarter of a century later, there are dozens of hybrids available new in the United States. The original is still the best, though. If you’re in the market for a hybrid car, the Toyota Prius is the best one. It’s efficient, it’s spacious, and it’s relatively affordable. If you don’t want to see it in your driveway, however, there are other great options ranging from a rugged pickup truck to a luxury car that’s equally at home on the road and on the track. At a glance Best hybrid: Toyota Prius Best hybrid sedan: Honda Insight Best hybrid SUV: Land Rover Range Rover P400e Best hybrid performance car: Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Best … [Read more...] about The best hybrid cars for 2021

There aren’t enough computer chips, VW warns, and it’s impacting car shipments

Of all the COVID-19-related setbacks, a shortage of semiconductors was low on the list of issues anticipated by carmakers around the globe. And yet, Volkswagen cautioned that it’s facing production delays due to supply issues. The German giant released a statement to explain it has to adjust production of every car built on its highly modular MQB platform in Europe, in China, and in North America. MQB underpins numerous nameplates, including the eighth-generation Volkswagen Golf, the Volkswagen Atlas, the Audi A3, the Audi TT, plus several SEAT and Škoda models sold overseas. Bigger models (like the Touareg) and electric cars (like the ID.3) are on a different platform. Semiconductors are found in a vast majority of new and late-model cars, where they’re part of a wide range of systems ranging from connectivity to electronic driving aids. While the global supply is normally relatively secure and stable, Volkswagen explained suppliers shifted their attention away from … [Read more...] about There aren’t enough computer chips, VW warns, and it’s impacting car shipments

Buick launched the first in-car touchscreen when the NES was still cutting edge

On the surface, you would assume the smartphone had a formative influence on the infotainment systems found in a vast majority of cars sold new in 2019. In a way, it did; it helped motorists get used to the idea of poking a screen to access the different functions packed into a car. However, automakers actually began experimenting with touchscreen technology when a cell phone was still a heavy, expensive status symbol. The first car equipped with an infotainment system is actually eligible to wear vintage vehicle plates; you’re more likely to see one at a classic car show than at CES. Showing a surprising amount of foresight, Buick was the first brand to offer a touchscreen in a series-produced model, the new-for-1986 Riviera. Now, the seventh-generation Riviera was no ordinary Buick. Its development phase was heavily influenced by two on-going shifts in the automotive industry. Firstly, parent company General Motors was in the process of shrinking most of the land yachts in its … [Read more...] about Buick launched the first in-car touchscreen when the NES was still cutting edge

The future of Facebook is Instagram

Instagram hasn’t seemed like its past self in a while. At the bottom of its app, no longer will you find an option to compose a new post or even a tab to browse who liked and commented on your recent pictures and videos. Instead, these are now tucked away in a corner to make room for the photo-sharing social network’s latest ventures: e-commerce and a bottomless pit of vertical videos . That’s not to be confused with the clips housed under the TV-like icon or the row of ephemeral stories at the top of your feed. Most of these didn’t exist two years ago. So what happened? The answer to that is flashed in all caps every time you open the Instagram app: Facebook. Move fast, break things Since Facebook spent a billion dollars eight years ago to acquire it, Instagram has fought hard to stay at an arm’s length from its hulking new owner. Its founders were promised autonomy, and they cashed in on that to retain Instagram’s core beliefs and values for as long as they could while … [Read more...] about The future of Facebook is Instagram
