This post contains a lot—a lot—of spoilers for Stranger Things, but you’ve probably watched it by now, haven’t you? What are you waiting for? The world of Netflix’s Stranger Things orbits around a trio of preteen boys who set out in search of their best friend when he disappears under deeply mysterious circumstances. But a few of the hit show’s vital female characters burn particularly brightly, like the psychokinetic young fugitive Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), mother-on-a-mission Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder), and the ill-fated cult favorite Barb (Shannon Purser). But ultimately, the young woman who’s stuck with me the most is a relatively unsung heroine. That would be Nancy Wheeler (played with understated brilliance by Natalia Dyer), older sister to Mike—friend to Will Byers, the missing boy—and herself best friend to Barb. Through Nancy, Stranger Things indicts horror’s historically narrow-minded, sexist portrayals of teenage … [Read more...] about In praise of Nancy Wheeler, the unsung feminist heroine of ‘Stranger Things’

This past Friday, Netflix released the second season of its hit series Stranger Things. Last year, the show appeared out of nowhere, catching pretty much everyone by surprise with its combination of retro-‘80s nostalgia and Steven Spielberg-meets-Stephen King storytelling. But this year, it was all about the expectations, with the streaming service creating a wave of hype that framed the show’s return as one of the must-watch entertainment events of the year. Now that we’ve actually had a chance to see what series creators the Duffer brothers put together for the sequel, a group of us here at The Verge decided to sit down and discuss our feelings about Stranger Things season 2. The nostalgia, new characters like Eight, Billy, and Bob, and the unanswered questions — we’re going to dig into it all. It should probably go without saying, but just in case:spoilers ahead. Did the new season recapture that surprise Stranger Things magic? Bryan: I really loved the … [Read more...] about Question Club: Is Stranger Things season 2 a worthy sequel to the original?
The '80s are officially back. And so is the decade's music. Netflix released the second season of "Stranger Things" Friday, and watching it brings you back to the era of "Terminator," "Ghostbusters," VHS tapes, the Cold War and teased hair. Jonathan asks his younger brother Will who he'd rather be friends with: David Bowie or Kenny Rogers. But don't get any ideas, this season you'll be listening to the latter. With "This Is Radio Clash" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go," The Clash makes a comeback after last year. That's Jonathan's sound. But there's also an investigative journalist with a soft spot for Billie Holiday. A mean stepbrother who's quite an enthusiast of the heavy metal sound of Metallica and Ratt. Joyce's new boyfriend, who looks like a goonie/hobbit, loves the definitely-too-sweet "Islands In The Stream" (we warned you there was going to be Kenny Rogers). Steve drives to the rhythm of "Hammer to Fall (Headbanger's Mix)" by Queen. And we learn that Nancy and Mike's … [Read more...] about ‘Stranger Things’ sounds: All the music from season 2
Warning: Spoilers for season 1 of "Stranger Things," and possibly beyond, await.I've been a Barb. Maybe you've been a Barb. Sometimes we all feel like a Barb.Poor Barb Holland (Shannon Purser) was the wingwoman of her best friend Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) on Netflix's "Stranger Things" series. When Nancy started dating Steve, Barb stayed loyal to her pal, even tagging along to a fatal party so Nancy could be with her new boyfriend. It's not super-fun to be a Barb. When Will Byers disappears, the town of Hawkins, Indiana, is consumed with hunting for him. School assemblies, search parties, he was probably on a milk carton, or at least an Eggo box. When Barb disappears from the party she probably didn't want to be at anyway? Huh. Is Barb gone? Hadn't noticed. Oh well, back to studying for the math test. But show creators Matt and Ross Duffer say the vanished bestie will get some justice in the second season of the show -- although she won't be resurrected. At home in Perth, Australia, Dacre Montgomery put on a G-string and filmed himself dancing to "Hungry Like the Wolf" by Duran Duran. He was shooting an audition tape for the makers of hit Netflix show "Stranger Things," which was looking to cast a new second season regular, Billy. Any Halloween goers dressing as the new character will need to sport a blond mullet and denim jacket with popped collar. Billy is step-brother to tomboy Max (played by Sadie Sink), another new character in season 2, which started streaming Friday. A huge fan of the show (he binge-watched the entire first season in one night), Montgomery needed to "blow it out of the park" to make the role his, he says. "I was lucky," he tells me in a hotel foyer in Sydney. He's wearing Adidas shoes and a silky green Cos shirt and buzzes with an energy that keeps him shifting on the sofa as we speak. "They saw something."Evidently, something more than the G-string. For a sign of what to expect of Montgomery in the new … [Read more...] about Meet the new ‘Stranger Things’ bully, mullet-haired Billy
