Now Playing: Watch this: Diving into the latest Project Morpheus games at E3 2014 2:40 Virtual reality is at E3. Sure, it's been around at other trade shows before. But after using both the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus and playing all the games they had to offer here in Los Angeles, I'm convinced the world of virtual gaming is coming sooner than anyone thinks.I tried both Project Morpheus and the Oculus Rift at E3 2014. Both VR platforms represent the biggest dogs in the space right now: they're also both more similar than you might think. And that's a good thing. A very good thing, if we're really going to have VR gaming take off beyond being a show-floor novelty. It's why I feel convinced that Morpheus and the Rift are a tandem, a one-two punch in consoles and PCs to push developers to start creating virtual games. There's a sense that a new landscape is being carved out, and it's a common landscape: one that finally feels close to a finished product. How far away are … [Read more...] about Project Morpheus vs. Oculus Rift: VR gaming gets very real at E3 2014
Now Playing: Watch this: Super Mario Odyssey is coming October 27 and it looks... 1:15 Zelda was a giant franchise cornerstone for the Nintendo Switch, but there's one bigger.Super Mario Odyssey's release date has finally been announced during Nintendo's E3 2017 livestream, and it's coming on October 27.Nintendo revealed the game back in January, complete with a trailer of Mario moving through a 3D sandbox-style set of worlds with different art styles. It looks like a return to Mario games like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, with a completely free-reign exploratory feel. It's got many bizarre mini-universes, including a New York City doppelganger called New Donk City. And, it involves a magic hat with eyes. Also, as we just learned, that hat can take over things: dinosaurs, tanks and just about anything. The new trailer is below, and it's pretty unbelievable. It also suggests an incredible level of weird play. For the Nintendo Switch, which is already a hot property, … [Read more...] about Super Mario Odyssey jumps onto the Switch October 27
Virtual reality is the holy grail of gaming. The ultimate in digital immersion -- at least, that is, until we can all get our own "Star Trek: TNG"-style holodeck. Complete visual entry into a computer-generated world was the stuff of fantasy in the '80s and a near reality in the '90s before being quickly being written off and mostly forgotten by the end of the century. Now, thanks largely to the Oculus Rift, virtual reality is back in the public eye. Sony desperately wants to get in on that excitement, unveiling a concept device called Project Morpheus at the Game Developers Conference. It's the full-on VR experience for your PlayStation 4, but there's a problem: console accessories always fail. You could fill a room (and indeed, I very nearly have) with misguided and poorly received add-ons from Nintendo alone. The Zapper, the Power Glove, the little R.O.B. robot, the giant Super Scope bazooka, the 64DD, the VRU...you get the picture. Microsoft's Kinect has been the rare success, … [Read more...] about Can Sony’s Project Morpheus finally bring virtual reality to home console gaming?
