Nintendo seems to be the last bastion of fun, local multiplayer video games. There are a few hidden gems on other systems, but if you want to gather around your HDTV with friends, the Nintendo Wii U is the way to go. That was the case with Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, and New Super Mario Bros. U, and it's the case with Super Smash Bros ($59.99). I've already looked at Smash on the Nintendo 3DS, and the brawler's first attempt on a handheld system proved to be a success. Now Super Smash Bros. is back on a home console as a Wii U game. It's basically the same game, a fighter in which you pick one of a few dozen Nintendo characters and smash away until you win. On the Wii U, though, it offers 1080p graphics, many more background songs, and very welcome 8-Man and Special Smash modes. It also lets you use GameCube controllers, meaning it's the closest thing to Super Smash Bros. Melee available for a long time, even if it's not actually Melee. It's another Smash … [Read more...] about Super Smash Bros. (for Nintendo Wii U)

Super Smash Bros. (for 3DS)
Not every fighting game needs to be a carefully tweaked and balanced competition of pure skill between equals. Sometimes you just want to experience fun characters hitting each other. Super Smash Bros. ($39.99) for the Nintendo 3DS proves you can have both. This video game all-star tournament fighter packs dozens of characters from Nintendo's history, plus Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Sonic the Hedgehog, into a customizable competition that can be as crazy or as carefully balanced as you want. Whether you want to hone your favorite character into a fine weapon for use on the competitive scene or just want to watch Mario punch Sonic, this game has what you need. A Wii U version of the game, which will feature high-definition graphics, is planned for November. For Fun and Glory Nintendo listened to fans' complaints about this game's predecessor, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and responded with a wide selection of options designed to please every type of Super Smash Bros. player. The … [Read more...] about Super Smash Bros. (for 3DS)
Super Smash Bros Announced for Switch
The last Smash Bros game released on the Wii U in 2014. And while it did fairly well (as well as anything could on the failing console), a lot of people have been clamouring for a new Smash game (or even a re-release like they did for Pokken and Mario Kart 8) for the Nintendo Switch. This weekend at the Nintendo Direct they finally confirmed, with a trailer, that Super Smash Bros would be launching on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. Not much else has been said about the game yet, but the trailer is a strong indication that the Inklings from Splatoon are going to be part of the roster. You can see the trailer below: … [Read more...] about Super Smash Bros Announced for Switch
New Super Smash Bros. Characters Leak
Get excited, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U fans. If you're tired of playing as the same-ol', same-ol' characters—or in this writer's case, tired of having your friends crush you with the same-ol', same-ol' characters—some information has recently leaked about about new future additions to the Smash Bros. roster. Allegedly, some creative types got ahold of the latest update file for Super Smash Bros.—an update for the Japanese iteration of the game that somehow launched than expected—and datamined the update to see if they could uncover anything interesting. And they sure did: New stages, costumes, trophies, and two special new victory videos for the likely new characters Ryu and Roy (from the games Street Fighter and Fire Emblem, respectively). That said, the leak isn't too bad, since it's likely that these characters were going to see the light of day as part of Nintendo's special E3 announcement about Super Smash Bros. The video presentation kicks off … [Read more...] about New Super Smash Bros. Characters Leak
Director: Super Smash Bros. DLC to ‘End Soon’
Downloadable content (DLC) for the Wii U version of Smash Bros will soon end, according to series director Masahiro Sakurai. He made the announcement during an interview featured in the Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets book, which was translated by Kantopia and SourceGaming. When responding to a question about Smash Bros. DLC, Sakurai said: "Well, DLC is coming to an end soon, too, you know?" During the interview, he also answered a question about the possibility of creating a new game that wasn't Smash Bros. "It's pretty difficult. If I keep making Smash, I get to work on interesting things like Ryu, but if I leave, I don't know if the staff could do it by themselves," he said. What's interesting here is that this applies for the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. The 3DS version of the game wasn't exactly mentioned, so it's possible that version of the game may get DLC in the future. At 5 p.m. ET today, Nintendo plans on releasing the last Smash … [Read more...] about Director: Super Smash Bros. DLC to ‘End Soon’
