Intel and the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) this week announced a three-year partnership to develop custom chips for defense systems. Under the terms of the deal, Intel will help DARPA convert currently used field-programmable gate arrays ( FPGAs ) into so-called structured ASICs (or eASICs), build new structured ASICs for DARPA's needs, develop custom multi-chiplet platforms for DARPA and manufacture those new custom chips at its Fab 42 using its 10nm technology. "We are combining our most advanced Intel eASIC structured ASIC technology with state-of-the-art data interface chiplets and enhanced security protection, and it’s all being made within the U.S. from beginning to end," José Roberto Alvarez, senior director, CTO Office, Intel Programmable Solutions Group, said in a statement. "This will enable defense and commercial electronics systems developers to rapidly develop and deploy custom chips based on Intel’s advanced 10nm semiconductor process." … [Read more...] about Intel to Make Custom Structured ASICs for US DoD’s DARPA

International Space Station astronauts do a Soyuz shuffle
This is shaping up to be a busy month on the International Space Station (ISS) with a craft arriving to drop off more astronauts to join the crew. To prepare for the arrival of an incoming flight, this week the crew had to take a Soyuz craft currently docked with the ISS on an extremely short trip around to the other side of the station. The ISS has various ports on its modules to which visiting ships can dock, which is useful as craft often need to remain docked for months after their arrival. Currently docked with the station is a Russian Soyuz MS-17 , which arrived in October last year and carried three astronauts: NASA’s Kate Rubins and Roscosmos’s Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov. Now, a second Soyuz is set to arrive in early April. The Soyuz MS-18 will carry three more astronauts, NASA’s Mark Vande-Hei and Roscosmos’s Oleg Novitsky and Pyotr Dubrov, to join the crew. But the MS-18 is to dock on the Earth-facing port on the Rassvet module, which the MS-17 was … [Read more...] about International Space Station astronauts do a Soyuz shuffle

NFTs and the explosive rebirth of artificial scarcity
Making a living from music is tough. Live events haven’t exactly been buzzing over the past year, physical media sales are largely in freefall, and — unless you’re a Drake or a Taylor Swift — streaming revenue is probably more of a drip than a stream. For more than a decade — 4,450-something days to be precise — Jonathan Mann has been steadily plugging away at his career as a musician. In addition to doing corporate gigs and commissions, he writes and posts a Song A Day on YouTube. He’s attracted a decent amount of attention from this but, like the overwhelming majority of artists, it’s still a grind to find ways to monetize his talent. A couple of years ago, Mann learned about CryptoPunks, a project carried out by a pair of technologist-artists who posted and sold a set of 10,000 unique characters on the Ethereum blockchain, with no two figures quite alike. He was fascinated. What if, Mann wondered, he took his first year of Song A Day songs, 365 in all, and put them on the … [Read more...] about NFTs and the explosive rebirth of artificial scarcity
How to watch ISS astronauts take their shortest ride yet on Crew Dragon
Four astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are about to take SpaceX’s Crew Dragon Resilience on its shortest mission yet, one that will last less than an hour. Expedition 64 astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Soichi Noguchi arrived at the ISS aboard the Crew Dragon last November , and early next month they’ll jump inside the spacecraft to change docking ports in preparation for upcoming crew swaps, including their own. First up, NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei and Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy and Pyotr Dubrov are expected to arrive at the ISS on the Russian Soyuz MS-18 spacecraft on April 9 as part of Expedition 65. They’ll replace NASA astronaut Kate Rubins and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, who will undock from the station’s Poisk module aboard the Soyuz MS-17 spacecraft on April 16, arriving back on Earth a short while later. Then, incoming on another Crew Dragon spacecraft on April 23 will … [Read more...] about How to watch ISS astronauts take their shortest ride yet on Crew Dragon
