Analysts Forecast TSMC To Double 5nm Output This Year
Earlier this year Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. outlined plans to increase its CapEx budget to $25 billion ~ $28 billion in 2021, many industry observers attributed the increase to building out 3-nm capacities in preparation to produce CPUs for Intel and other large customers. This is not quite the case, according to a forecast by China Renaissance Securities . At present, TSMC's N5 capacity is around 55,000 ~ 60,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM), according to a forecast by China Renaissance Securities, which reiterated it earlier this week. Given the fact that TSMC can no longer serve Huawei's HiSilicon, the foundry's main and biggest N5 customer is Apple, which uses this technology to produce its A14 Bionic as well as M1 system-on-chips for its latest products. Apple is one of TSMC's key customers that has early access to the latest process technologies and is among the first to adopt the newest nodes. Later this year other TSMC's customers, such as AMD and Qualcomm, … [Read more...] about Analysts Forecast TSMC To Double 5nm Output This Year

Following the launch of its RX 6800, RX 6800 XT, and RX 6900 XT graphics cards a few months back, AMD is back again with yet another GPU launch -- and it's happening in just under 3 hours. You can watch the event live here at 11am ET, 8am PT, in the video embedded below. Where Gaming Begins: Episode 3 Of course, we're all wondering which GPU is coming. Given that both AMD and Nvidia have announced their high-end products, and Nvidia recently announced the RTX 3060 as its mainstream option ( RTX 3060 12 GB Review ), there's a good chance that AMD is here to strike back at the green team in exactly that segment. With that in mind, and with what's been coming out of the rumor mill, we're convinced the GPU we'll see today is the Radeon RX 6700 XT. There have also been rumors of the RX 6700, but far from as many. There are also rumors that the 6700 is delayed, so chances are it will just be the 6700 XT today -- but we could get lucky and witness the birth of both cards at once. … [Read more...] about Watch AMD’s Radeon Gaming Livestream Here at 11am ET, 8am PT
Cryptominers Prop Up the Gaming Notebook Market: Report
Gaming notebook manufacturers may have found a new ally: cryptocurrency miners. DigiTimes today reported that the ongoing GPU shortage has led miners in China, Taiwan, and South Korea to purchase laptops featuring RTX 30 series graphics. The lack of available RTX 30 series graphics cards is only part of the reason for this shift, according to DigiTimes, which said the shrinking price gap between a desktop GPU and a gaming notebook has also contributed to the latter’s rise among miners. Some cryptocurrency miners have reportedly asked manufacturers to combine RTX 30 series graphics with budget components to further reduce that price gap. They aren’t planning to play games with the systems so why pay for other high-end parts? We already knew that some miners had turned to gaming notebooks , but the efforts to essentially buy a GPU with a laptop for a case are new, and the report suggested that relying on these devices is becoming more popular than originally expected. … [Read more...] about Cryptominers Prop Up the Gaming Notebook Market: Report
